Horror movies: we either love them, or love to hate them.

Some of us are totally cool with watching a horror flick in a totally empty theatre. Some of us need to watch it while cuddling a pillow, blanket on standby to cover their eyes, and a friend on each side to protect them from the gory ghouls. Best of all, Halloween is here, which means there’s even more reasons for a horror movie marathon! Whatever your preference is while watching scary movies, you’ll be sure to love the list we’ve got for you. Not only are they well made and directed, have great storytelling, and are creepy Halloween classics that we all love to hate, but they’ll be sure to spook you to the core.

Scream

First up is a Halloween classic – Scream. The horror-comedy quadrilogy never fails to delight viewers with one of the most famous slashers and Halloween costumes of all time, Ghostface. The franchise follows Sidney Prescott, a strong young female protagonist played by Neve Campbell and her rollercoaster ride to escape the murdering hands of Ghostface. With a never-ending carousel of cast members alongside Campbell, this movie is a great marathon session due to the continuity of it all and the comedy aspect that it has.

You’ll like Scream if you enjoy: Friday the 13th, Psycho, suspense, A Nightmare on Elm Street, slasher movies, horror comedies, Scary Movie.

Saw

“I want to play a game.”

Next is the gore-fest franchise, Saw. Spanning a storyline over 7 movies (and one more coming out this October!), these movies tell the tale of Jigsaw, a psychopathic murderer appearing in the form of a puppet. Put your iron stomach and your bravery to the test watching each of his victims fight desperately through his “games” to survive. Although Saw can get a little convoluted with the gore at times, it’s the perfect horror movie to watch with your friends; fingers over the eyes, of course. The first Saw movie was also James Wan and Leigh Whannell’s first movie! If you don’t recognise those names, you might recognise some movies they’ve done, including The Conjuring, Annabelle, Insidious and a whole bunch more. With titles like these in their repertoire, why not check out the movie that started it all?

You’ll like Saw if you enjoy: Dead Silence, gore, blood, The Conjuring, The Human Centipede, Dead Alive, Evil Dead.

Insidious

Don’t look behind you.

Speaking of James Wan and Leigh Whannell, the horror masterminds return to our list with trilogy Insidious. Starring Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne, this hair-raiser revolves around the drastic measures taken by the couple when their son is haunted by a malevolent entity in their new house. With the help of three demonologists, things get convoluted and creepy as the movie goes on. This flick is an extremely scary watch, especially for those who know a thing or two about astral projection. Sum up the courage to watch this in the dark for full immersion – by yourself, of course, with a big bowl of delicious popcorn. Because when you’re getting scared, why not shove a handful of popcorn in your mouth to distract from the horror?

You’ll like Insidious if you enjoy: Paranormal Activity, demon-like stuff, The Conjuring, Saw, Sinister, scary figures, Ouija, Oculus, Lights Out.

Haunted Hotel

Of course, we can’t leave out the local movies! Recently released, Haunted Hotel was not only shot in the notoriously haunted Amber Court hotel in Genting, but also showcases actors and talents from Thailand, China, and of course, Malaysia. Think about it – what do these three countries have in common? Yep, absolutely terrifying horror movies and ghosts. This movie in particular follows a female tourist and her friends from China, vacationing in Genting Highlands. Due to some confusion, the group ends up staying at one of Asia’s most haunted hotels, and the escape won’t be so easy. Unlike the other movies, you can still watch this on the big screen at the cinema! We can only imagine how terrifying this movie is going to be, but we know it’s gonna be a real entertaining watch.

You’ll like Haunted Hotel if you enjoy: The Shining, haunted hotels (of course), Malaysian horror myths, 1408, creepy ghosts, The Haunting.

Halloween

Last but definitely not least on our list is, of course, the classic Halloween. The 1978 classic stars scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis and revolves around Michael Myers, one of the greatest and most well-known horror villains of our time. After brutally murdering his 17-year-old sister at only six, Myers gets locked up and returns after 15 years to look for his next victim on the 31st of October. A classic slasher flick, you’ll be sure to devour this whole, especially on the best night of all: Halloween.

You’ll like Halloween if you enjoy: Halloween, slasher films, Scream, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, gore, A Nightmare on Elm Street, suspense.
